2017 Road Trip

For Regan’s 16th birthday present this year, we promised him a road trip to Ottawa. Mary and I covered half the common costs (hotel, gas, etc).

Here’s the route we took:

We covered 5 provinces, 13 states, 2 countries, all 5 Great Lakes, 5 church history sites, and 3 national parks.

We left on 28 June 2017.

We drove to Winnipeg the first day, stopping off in Regina on the way.

The next day, we stopped off at The Forks in Winnipeg before heading to Marquette, Michigan, driving through Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The next day, we drove all the way to Ottawa, with stops at Lake Superior, Lake Huron, and Lake Michigan.

On Canada Day, we made a day trip to Montréal for bagels and poutine. Best poutine ever! We also tried to visit Downtown Ottawa, but it was a nightmare.

We took it easy on the Sunday, attending church in Gatineau then hanging out at the hotel. Monday, we visited the outdoor market in Downtown Ottawa to buy gifts for the family and some samosas for our dinner. WE also bought supplies for the trip home. No photos though. 🙁

Tuesday, we drove to Niagara Falls, and took a day trip to Palmyra, New York.

Wednesday, we drove to Indianapolis, with a stop in Kirtland, Ohio. Didn’t get to stop at Lake Erie or Lake Ontario, but we could see them from our van as we were on the freeway.

The next day, we drove to Omaha, Nebraska, with stops in Carthage and Nauvoo, Illinois.

The next day, we drove to Rapid City, South Dakota. We visited Mt. Rushmore while we were there, and we nearly ran out of gas on the way there because we forgot to get gas after we got to our hotel.

Our last leg was Rapid City to Lethbridge. We stopped at Devil’s Tower on the way home.

It was a great trip. We had a few long days, and my neck was killing me by the time we returned home. It was also hot and humid for most of the trip. But we saw lots of cool things.
